John's Family Stories

John’s grandfather, Captain Laurence “Bobby” Anderson, (1891-1941) wrote a book with his cousin, Captain Laurence Henry Morrison (1886-1952). It’s title is “The Tanker in Practice : (Relating to the arrangement, management and maintenance of the liquid-in-bulk carrier. Her cargoes, cargo-handling and ballasting operations explained)". Snappy title!! It was published by Charles Birchall of Liverpool in 1935; John has a copy.

Captain Anderson was “Commodore” (Senior Captain) of the Hunting’s fleet but was lost via enemy action on 28th April 1941, aged 49 years. Huntings are still in business; at one point in their history they had one of the largest independent oil tanker fleets in the world.

There are letters from Morrison about the character of his cousin which are held in the Shetland archive in Lerwick. I intend to try and get a copy.
